The Gale Crater is on Mars. It is 154 kilometers in diameter. The original mission for the curiosity rover was to explore this crater because of a large mound of layered materials in the center of the crater. At the bottom of the mound are clay minerals. Above the clay layers are layers with sulfur and oxygen-bearing minerals are above them.
